Motorists using the M1 between London and Watford are facing disruption lasting more than a year due to a major programme of planned roadworks.

A notice from National Highways in this week’s edition of the Barnet Borough Times details its intention to make an order for the phased overnight closure of the motorway between Junction 1 and Junction 5, and all the roads leading to and from these lengths of carriageway.

The order is due to take effect on December 4 and the work is expected to take 13 months to complete, starting on or after Friday, February 4, 2022.

The notice states the overnight closures will take place every day for a maximum period between 9pm and 6am.

The programme of works are due to encompass resurfacing, bridge, drainage, street lighting, electrical, geotechnical and signage works and all associated maintenance.

The notices states traffic affected by the closures will be diverted using other junctions on the M1, and also the A41, A405 and A406.

The temporary closures and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the work period.
