Burger King has released new vegan nuggets from today (Wednesday 5 January) as a part of the brand’s pledge to make its menu 50% meat-free by 2030.

The chain has said the new nuggets will taste the same as the meat originals but will be made from only soy and plant proteins.

The nuggets are certified by the Vegan Society and follow the release of the Vegan Royale burger.

Burger King has said it aims to have a menu of 50% meat-free products by 2030 and targets to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 41%.

Burger King UK chief executive Alasdair Murdoch said: “We’re pleased to announce the launch of BKUK’s new vegan nuggets across our menus nationwide – a significant milestone for the company and an important next step in achieving our target.”

Adding that it is “another positive step in reducing our carbon footprint and driving innovation in our menus in response to a growing demand for meatless alternatives and products with no animal protein in the UK.”

The release comes following rivals McDonald’s releasing their “accidentally vegan” Veggie Dippers and the McPlant burger and Greggs’ vegan sausage roll and steak bake that has received a positive response.
